What do the colour purple and gender parity have in common?
According to International Women’s Day organisers, purple is historically associated with efforts to achieve gender equality.
And this year’s International Women’s Day theme is #PressforProgress – a response to the 2017 World Economic Forum‘s prediction that gender parity is a staggering 200-plus years away.
People across the world are encouraged to get involved in myriad ways, from social initiatives and awareness events to simply wearing the colour purple, the official colour of International Women’s Day.
If you’re passionate about equality and female rights, rocking a bit of purple on March 8 is a fantastic first step.

All in the accessories
A simple purple accessory like a piece of jewellery, ribbon or official wristband is a subtle but effective way of showing your support.
Wear it loud and proud
This year, Pantone has chosen Ultra Violet as its “colour of the year” to communicate “originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us towards the future”. So sporting a purple item of clothing isn’t just progressive, it’s also fashionable.
Nail it with beauty
Incorporate violet into your beauty routine with a purple nail polish or a purple liner (which will make green eyes pop in particular). For the more adventurous types, why not experiment with a purple rinse in your hair?
