Shane Warne: ‘It’s important for men to look after themselves’

Shane Warne’s high-profile relationship with Elizabeth Hurley brought him something other than global headlines – a whole new appreciation for self-care.

The legendary cricketer says he has always loved wearing fragrances – even helping himself to his dad’s Old Spice or Brut 33 as a youngster.

But he upped the ante on his approach to self-care during his relationship with the British model and actress from 2011 to 2013.

Shane says Elizabeth, the face of Estee Lauder, encouraged him to take better care of his skin by cleansing and moisturising every day.

As well as showering two or three times a day, the greatest spinner of all time now cleanses and moisturises daily as well as using an eye cream and lip balm.

“I know there’s still a bit of a stigma about it and that it’s seen as not a masculine thing to do to take care of yourself,” he says.

“But it’s just as important for men to look after themselves as it is for women.”

It was also during his time with Elizabeth that Warne first contemplated creating his own fragrance, after she opened his eyes to the power of scents.

Introducing Shane Warne’s new fragrance, SW23

And now the king of spin is about to launch his first fragrance, SW23 by Shane Warne, in partnership with Chemist Warehouse.

He was heavily involved in its development and sought advice from children Brooke, Jackson and Summer, as well as friends, when fine tuning his new fragrance.

Shane says SW23, a lightly citrus scent with hints of oak, “smells expensive” despite its relatively low price tag and will appeal to both men and women.

And the proud Advance Hair Studios ambassador wishes more blokes would follow his lead when it comes to self-care. He hopes that in being honest about his skincare regimen he will destigmatise it for other blokes.

“It’s like the Advanced Hair Studios stuff – it’s easy to make jokes at others’ expense,” he says.

“But having a bald spot or a receding hairline can really dent someone’s confidence. A lot of guys still come up to me and say thanks for helping them feel more confident. It’s great I could help them.

“If I could help others start looking after their skin too, well that would be great. I’d love to have my own skincare line one day. But let’s get them smelling good first!”

All profits from the launch of SW23 by Shane Warne will go to the My Room Children’s Cancer Charity.
