Drew Barrymore: ‘Being happy is the best thing you can do for yourself’

The actress and makeup entrepreneur shares her signature look and why you should love the skin you’re in.

Drew Barrymore’s cruelty-free Flower Beauty brand first launched in 2012, and is now available in Australia.

The House of Wellness catches up with the 44-year-old Hollywood star to chat about her approach to beauty.

Why did you start the Flower Beauty range?

I had just come off a six-year contract with CoverGirl and felt like I had this amazing education in mass make-up.

Simultaneously, I was approached by a major mass retailer in the US about bringing an exclusive brand to that retailer, but one that had an elevated experience as far as formulations, packaging and look and feel.

So a prestige product at a mass price.

The products are all cruelty-free. Did you encounter any obstacles when creating the range and ensuring they stayed true to your ethics and were an affordable option?

We only worked with labs that know upfront what our policies are and what we stand for. For me, not being cruelty-free was just never an option.

If you had to pick a current favourite (or two) from your Flower Beauty range, what are they and why?

That’s tough! One must-have for me is our Light Illusion Foundation. It blends so seamlessly without feeling heavy and gives a luminous, fresh-faced look to
the skin.

I’ve been reaching for our Mix n Matte Lip Duo a lot lately, it’s the best of both worlds. You get a creamy matte lipstick on one end and an illuminating gloss on the other so you can wear each side alone or mix together.

What are some of the make-up tricks you swear by?

I’m always learning new tricks from the amazing make-up artists that I work with but one of my favourites if you’re in a hurry is to dab a little of your lipstick on your cheeks and blend it out to use as a blush.

It creates a beautiful monochromatic look and is super easy.

With the launch of the range in Australia, do you have any plans to visit here?

Absolutely! I love Australia and have been many times, and I can’t wait to get there this year.

What is a beauty disaster you’ve had and learnt from?

I’ve done a lot of crazy make-up looks over the years and never regretted any of them. It’s make-up, there are just no rules.

Now fashion, that’s another story. I definitely have some fashion disasters out there.

Being natural and loving the skin you’re in is a message you also share on social media. Why do you think it’s important people heed that message?

Being happy is the best thing you can do for yourself, and that’s not always easy.

But you have to love yourself and I’ve never thought of make-up as a mask. It’s not something to hide behind, it’s a thing to work with your own natural beauty. And everyone has natural beauty.

Flower Beauty is available exclusively in Australia at Chemist Warehouse.
