7 ways honey is good for your health

It’s a delicious natural sweetener for all kinds of dishes – but honey is also creating a buzz for its many medicinal benefits.

Manuka honey in particular is touted as a “superfood” for its health benefits.

Take a look at seven reasons honey is good for you – in small doses.

1.      Honey is good for your gut

study by the University of Auckland found raw honey contained a compound that promotes good bacteria in the gut, which benefits our overall gut health.

Dietitian Anika Rouf says honey can potentially boost beneficial bacteria in our gut.

“Honey has gut health benefits, but it’s important to keep consumption minimal,” Anika, of Dietitians Australia, says.

Anika recommends trying other ways to improve your gut health, such as eating a wide range of fruit and vegetables.

2.      Honey can fight bad breath

It might seem counterintuitive that a sweet syrup can boost your oral health – but research shows that honey can help treat conditions including halitosis, dental plaque, gingivitis and mouth ulcers.

But Anika warns too much honey can cause tooth decay.

3.      Honey helps clear up skin

Raw honey is packed with minerals, vitamins and natural enzymes that nourish and hydrate the skin.

One of the easiest ways to incorporate honey into your skincare regimen is with a home-made face mask.

Studies have also found honey can also help treat skin conditions such as dandruff, dermatitis and eczema.

4.      Honey heals wounds

Honey is an ancient remedy for treating infected wounds, with its antibacterial properties working together to speed up the healing process.

To apply, spread a layer Manuka honey thinly and evenly over the wound.

5.      Honey can improve heart health

Honey is packed with antioxidants, which studies show can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

Studies have shown honey is rich in phenolic compounds associated with reduced risk of heart disease.

6.      Honey is a natural cold remedy

Next time you catch a bug, skip the medicine cabinet and head for the kitchen.

Honey can make for an effective natural cough remedy, coating the throat while soothing it.

Honey can be effective at preventing colds, with its antimicrobial, antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties working together to fight infection and strengthen the immune system.

7.      Honey can prevent reflux

Eating honey coats the oesophagus and stomach lining, preventing food and gastric guide from flowing upwards, says one study.

It can also help regrowth of tissues on the sphincter to reduce the chances of acid reflux.
