From branch to bottle: Why the olive leaf is a powerful source of wellness

Extra virgin olive oil is hailed for its health benefits – but it’s not the only way the olive tree can help keep us fighting fit.

At Cobram Estate’s olive groves in country Victoria, farmers carefully nurture more than 2.5 million olive trees from nursery to harvest.

Within just six hours of being picked, the olives are gently crushed and juiced – the fresher the fruit, the more antioxidants and essential nutrients are captured.

The olives are then transformed into the award-winning Cobram Estate extra virgin olive oils that are a staple in many Aussie kitchens.

Extra virgin olive oil is renowned for its health-boosting antioxidants and good fats.

But it’s not only the fruit from the olive tree that can give us the edge when it comes to protecting our health and supporting our immune system – its leaves can also pack a powerful punch.

The powers of olive leaf extract

Research by Australia’s Southern Cross University, published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, found olive leaf extract to be the most powerful, free radical-scavenging antioxidant of 55 medicinal herbs.

And research shows that’s mainly associated with one component – a powerful antioxidant known as oleuropein, which olive trees produce abundantly in their leaves and has been shown to be three times as powerful as vitamin C in recent laboratory testing (based on TEAC antioxidant testing of 1 gram of olive leaf extract (standardised to 10% oleuropein) and 1g of vitamin C, at Brunswick Labs).

The benefits of oleuropein

Oleuropein has been found to support the immune system in multiple ways.

A review paper in the Alternate Medicine Review indicated that it has many effects on the immune system to help support a strong response.

A number of scientific studies – including one by Chinese researchers published in bio-medical journal Oncotarget – have also focused on oleuropein’s powerful antioxidant qualities, finding it can help reduce free radicals formed in the body.

From branch to bottle

Of course, the fresher the leaves used in the olive leaf extraction process, the better.

And that brings us back to Cobram Estate.

Wellgrove Immune Support Olive Leaf Extract is made with fresh olive leaves sourced from Cobram Estate’s pristine farmland.

The same trees that produce the olive fruit for Cobram Estate’s extra virgin olive oils produce the leaves that go into Wellgrove’s Olive Leaf Extract.

The company’s natural “branch to bottle” method results in a unique broad-spectrum extract containing high total levels of oleuropein per dose, with a profile similar to the one found in nature.
