Why vegan protein powders are having their moment

The idea of healthy, plant-based proteins is proving hard to resist for many, including some of the world’s top athletes.

With vegetarianism and veganism on the rise in Australia, it’s no surprise there are increasingly more products to cater to this fast-growing market.

Research shows around 12.1 per cent of Aussies – almost 2.5 million of us – follow diets that are almost or all vegetarian.

And when it comes to those of us who eat no animal product at all? Vegan Australia estimates there are between 400,000 and 500,000 vegans nationwide.

It’s not only us mere mortals – some of the world’s top athletes are embracing veganism.

Serena and Venus Williams, runner Carl Lewis, and Aussie cricketers Adam Zampa and Peter Siddle are among a number of leading sports people who’ve chosen to forgo animal products for a plant-based diet.

For those thinking about making the change and worried about your protein sources, you can breathe easy.

While finding different means of getting enough protein was once a challenge, the Dietitians Association of Australia says with a little planning, it is possible.

Powering up with protein powder

Supplementing with vegan protein powder is an easy and fuss-free way (minimal prep!) way to boost your protein content.

What’s the difference between vegan protein powder and other powders? We’re glad you asked!

Choosing a vegan powder simply means the protein is coming from plants (think nuts, seeds, grains and legumes) rather than animal products such as dairy, meat and eggs.

A 2015 study by French researchers found pea protein to be just as effective as whey when measuring increases in “muscle thickness” making it a great option for meat-free athletes.

And a Journal of Nutrition study found pea protein ranks higher than most vegetable protein sources on the PDCAAS (protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score).

Vegan protein powder and sensitive stomachs

Research published in the journal Nutrients showed those who eat a plant-based diet have a unique gut profile containing fewer disease-causing organisms and more protection against inflammation.
