The (many) reasons we can’t live without dry shampoo

Despite best intentions, you’ve slept straight through your alarm and now there’s no chance of washing your hair before that important morning meeting. Thank goodness for dry shampoo!

Not only does this wonder product save you from greasy hair, it also hides a multitude of sins.

Cleaner hair is not always better

Too much washing and drying dries out your tresses, causing them to lose their lustre.

Using a dry shampoo between washes can give new life to your locks – and you more precious time in the morning or before a big night out.

Model, TV host and mum-of-four Bec Judd is a fan, revealing she’d rather spend time outside with her kids than slaving in front of a mirror.

“As soon as I wake up, it’s coffee, brekky, shower, dry shampoo, concealer, powder, brows, mascara – and done,” says 35-year-old Judd.

“My beauty routine only takes a few minutes, which is all I can spare if I want to make time for work, family and exercise.”

So how does dry shampoo work?

Essentially a powder or a fast-drying spray, dry shampoo is a quick, portable and water-free option for cleaning your hair.

It works by soaking up excess oil and sweat from the scalp.

It not only gives new life to second-day locks but also provides a serious root lift, giving instant volume and oomph on a “flat-hair” day.

For brunettes and redheads, look for a tinted formula that will give an invisible finish (ie. no white residue in your hair) without staining your scalp, hands or clothes.

There are also products available especially for sensitive scalps.

How to use dry shampoo

While it’s a lot quicker than jumping in the shower, it’s still worth taking the time to apply dry shampoo properly.

Start by shaking the can. Then hold it about 30cm from your head and spray on to the roots in sections, making sure your whole scalp is covered with product.

Leave for around two minutes.

Either use a brush or a hairdryer to remove any excess residue. If you have curly hair, massage through with your fingers.

For day two or three hair, leave on a little longer or the night before to give the dry shampoo more time to work its magic.

Other reasons we love dry shampoo

Your hair should feel lighter, more refreshed, volumised and texturised.

Stylists love using dry shampoo for photoshoots when they need to revive hair in between takes, as well as for fuller-looking and more voluminous hair.

Another favourite trick of those in the know is to spray your bobby pins with dry shampoo – the powders create friction, meaning they stay in the hair without falling out.

We’re not quite sure how we ever survived without this low-maintenance beauty product in our increasingly busy lives – but we’re happy we found it.
