3 ways to survive a day in heels

It’s party season – and for many of us that means we’ll spend all day and night in heels.

If you’ve ever had to wear heels for an extended period of time, you’ll know that chic can turn shabby after a long day on your feet.

Thankfully, some simple hacks can help you turn heads all day, for all the right reasons.

Pack lightly

Yes, you do need to be prepared for a long day or night (or sometimes both) of festive fervour.

But the key is to pack smartly – bring only the things you really need and can easily hold in a simple clutch.

Think oil blotting sheets if you’re prone to shine, a portable charger if your phone is on its last legs, and, if you’re likely to be out in the sun for all or part of the day, pocket-sized sunscreen and sunglasses.

Don’t bet on the weather

We’re into the warmer months, but there’s no guarantee that will mean sun.

Layering is the answer, particularly if the weather is looking unpredictable or likely to change dramatically over the course of the day.

For inclement weather, a lightweight trench is a great option. It’s not too heavy if you need to lug it around, and its elegant, timeless silhouette will complement most cocktail fashion choices.

Hot foot it

It might seem like a great idea to set your feet free after a night of wining, dining and dancing.

But let’s be honest, it’s hard to be glamorous if you’re carrying your shoes instead of wearing them. Or if your shoes are so uncomfortable that you’re forced to do a #shoedini (disappearing act).

You’ll likely be doing a lot of walking, mingling and dancing on your feet this festive season, so choice of footwear is crucial.

Choose a heel you’ll be comfortable wearing all day – that might be a kitten heel or wedge rather than a sky-high stiletto.

It goes without saying that you’ll benefit from wearing shoes you have well and truly worn in.

But if your heart’s set on a brand-new pair, wear them in as much as you can in the lead-up to your party or event, even if it’s just pottering around the house.

However you end up dressing your feet, and no matter how worn-in the shoe, you’ll find gel insoles or inserts could be just the thing you need.

Not only do they provide invisible cushioning for the foot, but they provide added comfort so your feet won’t let you down.

And that will dramatically decrease your likelihood of a footwear faux pas as the day rolls on.
