10 new hair and beauty trends to try this autumn

Face up to the new season with confidence – add these simple catwalk tricks and techniques to your repertoire for a stylish autumn look.

1. Textured Tresses

If you’re blessed with naturally wavy/curly hair, now is the time to show it off.

Textured hair – from beach-tousled manes to tight, glossy curls – was a popular trend on the catwalks. The best way to get definition in your natural hair texture is to spritz in some sea salt spray when damp and dry your hair with a diffuser.

If you have pin-straight hair, don’t fret! Apply the same product, but let it dry overnight in a twist bun.

2. Rock a Red

You can’t go wrong with a classic red lip, but this season it’s about the make-up – or lack thereof – that you pair it with.

Vibrant shades of red paired with minimal make-up was popular on the runway, as shown at Jason Wu’s S/S17 show, with shades varying from blue-based reds to dark wines.

To nail the look, make sure you keep the rest of your make-up muted and apply concealer around the lip line to ensure the lip has a crisp finish.

3. Long and Sleek

A major trend this season, sleek, glossy straight hair was a key runway look at the Versace S/S17 show.

If a hair straightener won’t suffice, try a temporary straightening treatment that helps to smooth follicles and give a sleek finish.

Once you’ve dried your hair and achieved a finish you’re happy with, apply some hairspray to a tissue and go over hair to tame flyaways.

4. Wispy Ways

All things ’70s are being embraced left, right and centre, and the wispy fringe is no exception. It has been dubbed the “lazy girl” hairstyle of the season due to its low maintenance, and dry shampoo is the only styling tool necessary.

The style is for a longer fringe, which is prone to sitting on the face and getting oily; dry shampoo helps alleviate greasy hair and adds texture.

5. Minimal Base

This season’s make-up takes a step away from heavy-handed contouring, opting instead for an understated, slightly dewy base.

To get the look, first ensure your skin is moisturised and primed before applying your favourite liquid foundation. To avoid a cakey look, use a light to medium coverage foundation and apply with a damp foundation sponge.

If you’re naturally blessed with freckles, apply foundation with an extra-light hand so they peek through.

6. Go Bold or Go Home

If there’s one particularly daring look to test out this season, it’s the draping trend.

With a nod to the ’80s, this involves draping blush beyond the apples of your cheeks, extending it to the high point of your temples and following the natural pattern of your cheekbones.

If you’re really game, extend the blush to the outer corners of your eyelids, as shown at the Kenzo S/S17 show.

If you’re not big on bold looks, simply apply a softer blush shade, which will give a more subtle finish.

7. Cupid’s Bow

At the Jasper Conran S/S17 show it was all about embracing a cherubic, rose-tinted lip with subtle highlight on the cupid’s bow.

Not everyone’s gifted with a strong cupid’s bow, so applying an illuminator to the area will help bring the philtrum (lip grooves) forward.

To finish the look, apply a peach or rose-toned gloss.

8. Loose Pony With a Twist

Relaxed hairstyles – ranging from messy bed hair to loose, knotted ponytails – were a big feature at the Dawid Tomaszewski x Patrizia Aryton F/W17 show.

With this look, the key is to achieve a “je ne sais quoi” vibe without trying too hard. Simply pull your hair into a loose pony, secure with hair tie and then, using bobby pins, pull up segments into a loose updo, leaving some sections out.

Finish the look with a texturising spray.

9. Smoky Gloss

The smoky eye trend is making a comeback, albeit with a new glossy twist.

The look was popular at Elie Saab F/W16-17, where the models showed off a moody, smoked-out eye that extended to the “outer v” of the lid.

The subtle gloss on the centre lid gives the trend an updated twist, while adding dimension.

10. Subtle Shimmer

The old-school beauty tip of applying a shimmery, light eyeshadow to the inner corner of the eye has been revitalised this season. In addition to brightening the eye overall, this look makes you appear more wide-eyed and awake. It was embraced at London Fashion Week, especially at Daks’ S/S17 show.

Recreate the look by using a pigmented shimmery, light eyeshadow in a pearlescent white shade.
